RI Senator questions aspects of auto insurance reform plan

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. Hearings will be held this fall on auto insurance reforms proposed by Governor Romney, but the chairman of the Senate Committee on Financial Services is already expressing concerns with the bill.

Senator Andrea Nuciforo (AHN'-dray-ah NOO'-si-FOR'-oh) of Pittsfield says he disagrees with the proposal to allow companies to calculate premiums based in part on a driver's age, marital status and credit score. He says while there is a statistical correlation between those factors and a person's likelihood of filing a claim, they don't take into account an individual's driving record or experience.

Nuciforo says the state should focus instead on lowering overall costs in the system by cracking down on fraud and making traffic improvements to reduce the number of accidents.
