SC drivers pay less than U.S. average for insurance

From the Sun News

S.C. drivers on average spend $744.79 per year on auto insurance, a price that is lower than the national average of $820.91.

That's the latest information from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

The association did a study of 2003 auto insurance premiums and expenses nationwide.

Factors that influence the cost of coverage may include the type of car and safety features, amount of miles driven and type of driving. Other factors are family claim record, including the number of wrecks and their severity; driving record, including speeding tickets; age; gender; and experience of driver.

There are ways drivers in South Carolina can reduce their auto insurance costs even more:

Shop around. But don't shop by price alone. You want a company that answers your questions and handles claims fairly.

Ask for higher deductibles.

Deductibles represent the amount of money you pay before your insurance policy kicks in. By requesting a higher deductible, you can lower your costs substantially.

Reduce coverage on older cars. Consider dropping collision and/or comprehensive coverages on older cars.

Buy your homeowners and auto coverage from the same insurer.

Ask for discounts. You can get discounts for driving a lower than average number of miles per year, being a safe driver, taking a drivers education course, being a good student, having a good driving record and having good credit.

Before you buy a car, compare insurance costs.
