Geico opens N.J. call center

Geico, which began selling auto insurance policies in New Jersey for the first time in 28 years last summer, has opened a new claims center to handle its growing New Jersey business.

The claims center is in Marlton, N.J., and includes training areas and room for expansion. Geico has about 90 employees in New Jersey, including three dozen field adjusters.

District-based Geico announced in August that it would return to the New Jersey market after the state enacted insurance reforms that included a requirement that insurance companies cover all drivers. The legislation also dropped a requirement that insurers return part of their profits to customers.

New Jersey has the highest auto insurance rates in the nation.

Geico, owned by billionaire investor Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway, says it has sold about 180,000 policies to New Jersey drivers since reentering the market.
